Hi there! I'm sorry I haven't been blogging as often as I used to. I miss it so much! I'm finding it hard to balance life and all the social medias that I love. Hopefully I can get better at it! Right now I'm most active on Instagram and Facebook so please add me there to see what I'm up to :)

When I have time, I love creating fun videos on YouTube too and here is my latest one. I hope you like it! I would love to see your special finds at your stationary store. Hashtag littlerandomhappiness on IG if you do. I would love to see them!

Have a wonderful weekend!little random happinesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09536838687121647923noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7474318605417698712.post-83383358250615700712014-04-07T09:46:00.002-04:002014-04-07T09:46:49.420-04:00NYC Cronut Adventure

I'm still dreaming about that Cronut. It tasted amazing! I can't get over how good it was. It was one of the best pastries I've ever had. The flavors were delicate and complimented each other really well. I wish I have one now! Chef Ansel launches a new flavor every month and they always look good. If only I can taste them all :)

Here are some tips if you're planning to go on your own Cronut adventure:

1. Go early. The bakery opens at 8am. We went on a Monday and it was cold so I didn't think the line was going to be too crazy. We were in line at 7:30 am and were in the bakery by 9:00 am. I'm sure this will be different when the weather gets warmer. Lines are known to start as early as 5:00 am when it was first introduced. There's no guarantee that you'll get a Cronut just because you waited in line. They sell out quickly so go as early as you can!

2. You're going to be in line for a while so bring someone you really like :) The time will fly by when you have good company.

3. If you weren't able to get a Cronut or if you are not an early bird, there are still many delicious items you should try. The crazy Cronut line was gone be 10:00 am so go there later in the day and enjoy all the other pastries.

4. There's also a pre-order system on their website that's opened every Monday. I heard it's pretty hard to log on because of the number of people logging on at the same time. If you're lucky enough to order, you can just skip the line and pick up your wonderful Cronuts so it might be worth a shot.

I can't wait to go back and try more pastries and desserts. Chef Ansel's creations are fun and delicious (his latest is a milk and cookie shot!). He is so inspiring with his passion for baking and creating new treats. His bakery is a must-vist if you're ever in New York City :)

I found these beautiful pink biscuits while shopping in a boutique chocolate shop and I had to get them. They're so pretty! I was told that French people dunk them in their champagne for a sweet treat. How wonderful is that? Although I haven't tried them with champagne yet, I was inspired to make a rose lychee tiramisu right when I saw these lovely pink biscuits.

Rose lychee is a flavor combination that I fell in love with when I tried Pierre Herme's Ispahan macarons. I was really excited to adapt it into a tiramisu version. I've never made tiramisu before and through my internet search, it doesn't look like anyone else have made a rose lychee tiramisu before either! IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I CAN BE THE FIRST ONE EVER? This thought alone was very exciting :) Even if I'm not, I'm really proud of how it turned out. I made changes to a matcha tiramisu recipe that I found and the result was amazing!

James also requested me to make the matcha tiramisu :) My family really enjoyed it at our New Year's celebration last weekend and that made me really happy. I can't wait to make it again and test out a few tweaks to my recipe. I will share it once I have the chance to test it out a few more times so stay tuned!
I'm so happy to be blogging again. The past four to five months have been pretty tough. James and I would work at our job during the day and then head to our place afterwards to fix it up. We would get home at 1 or 2 am and basically crash and do it all over again the next day. We were exhausted but extremely happy to finally have a place to call our own. It was hard work but it's so rewarding.

I can't wait to share pics of our labor of love. It's still a work in progress but I'm excited that the hard labor part is done. Now the fun begins with all the decorating and furnishing. I hope you enjoy these posts and videos about our new home :)
Painting over Wood Paneling

I wish we had time to film how we prepped the wood panel walls before we painted them but filming at night was challenging. The lighting was off and it didn't help that the walls were so dark. We looked like zombies on top of that. It just wasn't pretty. Luckily, there are already videos out there that shows how it is done (I will link one of them below).

Here's what we did if you are thinking of painting over your wood panelings:

1. Wipe the walls and make sure that they are clean and dry.
2. Lightly sand the wood panels with 100 grit sandpaper. This will help the drywall joint compound and paint adhere better.
3. Wipe down the walls again with a damp rag, making sure they are clean and dry.
4. Fill in the wood panel grooves with drywall joint compound. See how it's done here.
5. Allow the compound to dry completely before sanding it down. You might need to add another layer of compound depending on how deep the grooves are.
6. Wipe down the walls again with a damp rag.
7. Now you're ready to paint on a coat of oil-based primer.
8. Once that is dry, paint on two coats of your favorite paint color.

We painted our walls with Sherwin Williams' Amazing Gray (SW 7044) with the SuperPaint formula in Satin finish. We love the color and the paint was very high quality. It went on smooth and beautiful. We highly recommend it!

Furnitures and Home Decor

As for our living room furnitures and decor, I like to mix pricer pieces with inexpensive ones. We tend to invest more money into pieces that will get a lot of usage like our sofa and rug. We also love to check craigslist.org to see what's available. We scored a few good pieces on there. Our coffee table was originally $600 from Crate and Barrel but the previous owner sold it to us for only $60!
I love TJ Maxx and Homegoods for fun inexpensive decors. Their selections are always changing so it's fun to poke around and see whats new. Joss and Main, an online website, is my new favorite place to look for home stuff too. They have daily sale events and their customer service is excellent. I've found many cool pieces there.

I finally did it! I started my own YouTube channel! I'm so excited with this new project. I've been wanting to do this for a while now. I love blogging and this channel is going to make it even more fun. I'll be able to show you my DIY projects and recipes in video format. They're going to be a lot easier to follow than a series of step-by-step photos.

I'm aiming to have a video up every Friday but I'm still finding my way around video editing and YouTube so please forgive me if it's not consistent at first :)

I hope to see you there and please subscribe to get my video updates. Thank you so much for inspiring me to be more creative! Minions! I had the pleasure of making these cuties for a special birthday last week :)

I piped small circles of macaron batter for the eyeballs once the macaron rounds have set. It gives it a nice raised texture once they are baked. I painted the outer edges with edible Pearl Dust mixed with a little lemon extract and filled them in with white chocolate. I then dotted each eyeball with milk chocolate. I drew the rest of the details with edible marker :)
I love traditional Asian outfits and one of my favorites has to be the kimono. I've always wanted to wear one and was excited when my friends recommended Okamoto, a kimono rental shop, in Kyoto. There were numerous kimonos, obi, hair accessories, etc. to choose from. I went with Plan 3 which gave me the most selection. It costs around $60 to rent it for the day and getting my hair done was only an extra $5! I really love the whole process. It was interesting to see the amount of work that goes into wearing a kimono. It was beautiful to watch how they put the kimono on me layer by layer. There were many layers and each had to be folded and tied in different ways. It really is an art in itself.

Btw, I love that my obi has the same pattern as the bottom layer of our wedding cake! I may or may not have chosen it because of this reason ;)

It was a nice treat though :) Kyoto is beautiful and so picturesque. Nara, like many places in Japan, is very magical. As we walked around, I can't help but feel like we were in a mythical place. Walkways are lined with hundreds of moss-covered lantern structures. The temple and shrines are grand yet understated. Friendly deers roam freely around the city. They are loved by the locals because they are believed to be messengers to the gods. It is definitely one of my favorite places in Japan.

We're having quite the heat wave here in Boston. It's going to remain in the mid 90s for the rest of the week. Hot days like these make me yearn for the cool fall weather. I find myself daydreaming about my favorite season and the wonderful honeymoon we had last year. I'm very late in sharing these pictures but I hope you'll enjoy these upcoming posts about the Japan portion of our trip :)
The hot weather is making me think of ice cream so I'll start our Japan recap with our trip to Gion Kinana :) Michael aka Kyoto Foodie wrote a great post about it. I knew we had to make a stop there. We got the seasonal chestnut autumn parfait and it was amazing! There was a beautiful balance of textures and flavors from all of the components of the parfait - the candied chestnut, the chestnut mousse, the biscotti, the cake pieces, the ice cream, and the mochi. Only twenty of these are made daily. James and I went to the shop right when they opened at 11am and all of the seats were filled within 30 minutes. (So remember to get there early if you want one of their seasonal parfaits!)
We also ordered the highly recommended kinako (roasted soybean flour) dekitate ice cream. Dekitate ice cream are ice cream that are just made. Since they haven't been frozen yet, they are very creamy and super smooth. The flavor is delicate and unlike anything I've tasted before. Oh what I would give to eat it again!
I wanted to make something special for our one year anniversary and thought that a mini macaron wedding cake would be really cute. I was so excited when I came up with the idea. I couldn't wait to make it and take photos of it! :) The sugar pearls and pearl dust make the macarons look very elegant. I love it so much!

The top macaron is only about 1 inch in diameter and the bottom is 2.5 inches so this little cake is tiny! I filled them with an orange Grand Marnier ganache since our wedding cake was also an orange Grand Marnier cake. It's so cute that I couldn't eat it yet. It's still sitting in my freezer right now lol. Good thing I made extra macarons without the pearls so that James and I can enjoy them :)

Btw, the tiny rose is made out of clay. I bought a small bouquet of them years ago at a flower show. Maybe one day I can try to make sugar flowers!

On our anniversary, we stopped by the garden before dinner and saw this magical scene. Romeo* and Juliet, Boston's famous swans, were tending to their nest. It was beautiful to watch them. They've been a couple for over 10 years! I love the fact that swans do tend to mate for life. That's really special.
This guy made me smile. He was standing there like that for a while. He looked right at me when I approached him. I can't believe this past Sunday was our one year wedding anniversary. The year flew by! One of the things we did to celebrate was eating the top tier of our wedding cake that has been in the freezer this whole time. I love fun wedding traditions so this was a must! (You can read more about this tradition here.)
Eating a one year old cake sounds scary but James and I couldn't believe how good our cake still tasted! The cake was moist and the flavors were still there. One bite and it brought us right back to our wedding day.

We had a wonderful time reminiscing our special day. I have more photos to share of our simple celebration so please excuse all the lovey dovey posts this week :)
Did you save your wedding cake? How did it taste?
This Sunday is the second annual Japan Festival in Boston. We participated last year and had a really fun time. The weather is suppose to be gorgeous this weekend too so I'm very excited. Here's a glimpse of some of the photos I will be selling. Hello all! Wow, I'm very behind with my blog postings. I assure you it's for good reasons :) I've been busy getting ready for the shows this season. I also have a few exciting business opportunities that have come up. I haven't decided what to do yet but I hope to share some goods news soon! Anyhow, James and I went to Quebec City this past weekend to celebrate our up-coming one year wedding anniversary. (I can't believe it's going to be a year already!) Here are some photos from our trip :)
We found these awesome macarons at Marche du Vieux-Port (a farmer's market in Lower Town). Aren't the colors amazing? They tasted great too. I am so inspired by them. I can't wait to make a vibrant batch of macarons now! Btw, we also bought locally made maple butter and apple butter at this market. (The vendor won us over with her delicious samples!) It's a fun place to go and see where the locals shop.
Quebec City is so charming and the people are really nice. We had such a fun and relaxing time. I have to thank my wonderful husband for planning everything. We had an amazing turnout for opening day this year. It was a great way to start the open market season. I want to thank my wonderful friends for coming out and always being so supportive of my little business. Thank you to all who stopped by as well :)
Time really flies! We're entering our 3rd season at SoWa Open Market this Sunday and I can't wait! I am so excited to debut these cute throw pillows that mom and I have been making for the past few months. I've shared pictures of them in this post before but since then we've made three more adorable animals - bears, monkeys, and pigs - and also mini versions too! Don't you want to take one home with you? :)
These handmade miniature guitar pins/brooches will also be available for purchase. These are handmade by my uncle in the Netherlands (see more of his work here). They are extremely intricate. (Look at the guitar strings!) I am so proud to be able to share his amazing work. Btw, I think these pins would be such a cool alternative for a boutonniere for a guitar-loving groom-to-be!
These wired headbands are also new for the season. Mom and I made these too! They are pretty and fun to wear. I was inspired to make them after seeing them in Asia and finding out that they are hard to find here.
Hi everyone! I'm happy to start blogging again after the tough week we had (Boston Strong!!!). I still have a lot of photos to share from our honeymoon and today I want to talk about our favorite breakfast place in Seoul. Almost every morning, James and I bought sandwiches at this place call Isaac which was just a few steps away from our hotel.

They were simple sandwiches with just ham, egg, and cheese but they were delicious! They were made to order so the sandwiches were nice and warm. The bread was perfectly toasted with a bit of butter. There was some sort of sauce on it too. I'm not sure what it was but it was slightly sweet and made the sandwiches extra tasty. We looked forward to eating them every morning. (Don't worry, we still ate plenty of yummy Korean food!)
We really love finding little places like this when we travel. The funny thing is that we both thought this was a mom-and-pop business because it was tiny and the same nice lady made our sandwiches every time. It wasn't until a few weeks ago when I watched Eat Your Kimchi that I found out that Isaac is actually a very popular chain in South Korea with thousands of stores! So weird that we didn't see any other one the entire time we were there. (Maybe it's a good thing because I would've been tempted to eat it all the time! lol)
Thank you to all the heroic people who were out there. Their bravery, courage, and selflessness shined through and showed that there is much more good than evil in this world.
